Your toddler needs to have a chance to join in the Halloween fun just like the adults and the older children. Dressing up your toddler in a toddler Halloween costume can be fun and he or she will learn and be apart of the Halloween spirit. When picking out a Halloween costume for your young one, you might want to go simple. Complex costumes with a lot of buckles and zippers will probably be more trouble that it is worth when trying to move around with your toddler. You want to think of comfort and safety first. This is a big night for the toddler and you do not want them cranky because of ill fitting clothes or a costume that might be too heavy or hot for them to wear.

For the real little ones you might want to make a homemade toddler Halloween costume. You can start with what you have. You probably already have a footed pajama outfit lying around. Decide what the character should be and design around that idea. Remember you want to keep it simple. If you want your child to be a devil, you can choose a red jumper or dye it red. If you want your child to be puppy, a brown or black footed pajama suit will work. A toddler usually will not be able to wear a mask because not only is it a safety issue, but it is a new item that the toddler has to get used to.

The best thing to use for the toddlers face instead of a mask is face paint. You can color in a dark nose and whiskers for a cat or a dog or color a red nose and freckles for Raggedy Ann or a clown. The face paint can be easily washed off. You might want to put the paint on in front of the mirror. That way your little one can see what you are doing and will not be startled if he or she sees themselves in the mirror. A tiara or wig can complete the toddler Halloween costume or you can put on devil horns, elf ears, or a angel’s halo. Hats make good accessories to, but make sure they have a chin string or other ways to attach it to the head. A loose hat could come off and trip the child.

In making or buying a toddler Halloween costume, safety should be the first concern. The toddler lives up to their namesake by not being to steady on their feet. If you do use the feet in pajamas, make sure that the feet are snug and will not trip the little one. Also, though it sounds inhumane, you may want to get a child leash for trick or treating. With all the excitement your child could easily get away from you and run into traffic. If you dress your toddler as a dog or cat, the leash would be unobtrusive and most people will think it is part of your toddlers Halloween costume. The safer you make the event for your toddler the more the toddler will learn what safe behavior is and how to behave next year when they are older.
