One of the most important things in life is being a kid and as we grow up we experience many things that become treasured memories. Halloween should be one of these treasured memories and much of this has to do with how parents prepare and organize – including the dressing up in a costume.

The excitement of your first Halloween costume – the spookier the better – is a memory that is treasured as a feeling more than anything else. It isn’t just a question of putting on a strange hat or clothes. The whole point is to disguise yourself, and from the point of view of a small child this disguise becomes a complete change: he is transformed into a different person or even creature. This Halloween try and observe a child and how he acts with his costume on – kids really believe they have turned into somebody else.

They become their Hero (with a capital H) – and heroes are good people and super heroes are super good.

So when they turn into Batman or Wolverine or Luke Skywalker, there is a part of them that really does change. Subconsciously they absorb their heroes powers, their ethics, their strength and bravery. Super Heroes are role models for kids.

The scarier costumes, and surely every parent will agree, are great fun but shouldn’t be for small kids and toddlers – they are best for slightly older kids. And here part of the fun is to scare others and since everybody knows its a game and make believe, it becomes a moment of fun.

A small child can get confused. As a four year old I got a Superman costume, but just as I as about to launch myself into my first solo flying trip my mum came into the bedroom and stopped me. It was actually one of my greater frustrations ’cause I knew that it was the costume that gave him the power to fly.

The point of all this is that kids live with great intensity. Halloween and all that goes on during this holiday is and should be an intense moment for young kids. Putting on that costume and walking around in it is an emotional experience and with a little help from the parents, a memory to be treasured.

Take a little time to choose your kids costume. Age has a lot to do with it – for a toddler, perhaps the best tip is to go for the “OOH! He looks so cute!” feeling. From then on think about his or her heroes, the movies they have recently enjoyed, the books you’ve read to them. This year you have great choices from X-Men, Transformers, Star Trek, Harry Potter and so on.

The candy, the celebration, the party atmosphere, the decorations, the trick-or-treat, the ghosts, the heroes and your kids own particular and special costume is a time you should make the most of and your kids should enjoy completely.

You’ll know it was great when you say “Do remember when Joey wore his Wolverine costume?”
